Last year I learned how to sketchnote.

I also learned how to braid my hair.

And to do modern calligraphy/hand lettering.

And how to improve my mobility.

I was able to learn these things because, for the first time in years, I had downtime. Not time where I was procrastinating or ignoring my responsibilities. I’m talking time when I literally had nothing I had to do.

Instead of watching daytime television, I decided to take some online classes. I also watched a lot of YouTube videos. What I learned is that while there is plenty of mediocre content out there, there is also some really helpful, informative content. Content that can walk you through how to french braid your hair. Content that can show you how to set up a bullet journal. Or different shoulder stretches.

With each new skill I learned, I was grateful for these people who had taken the time to share their knowledge and experience. I also admired their passion and dedication to creating content that was useful, well organized, and well produced.

I get that many of these people are making money from sharing this content, but that’s okay with me since it added value to my life. I found myself being inspired by these content generators, not because I’m interested in building a social media empire, but because I have my own experiences and knowledge that may be helpful.

I don’t know if the shareable knowledge I have is valuable to one person or a hundred people, but even if there’s one person that finds it useful, isn’t that reason enough to share?
